The blue slow motion, the blue plastic rock and the blue
sand are elements superposed and used as a metaphor and
criticism of a human desire to manipulate and transform
nature for its own comfort and pleasure. In the complex
relationship between humans and the land, blue is
transforming the landscape, performing and questioning
poetically the politics of the self and moving slowly
towards a strong connection with the land. In a specific
spot, a simple action, a new repetition new everytime.

ALTOFEST is a human-specific project that turns homes into performance spaces after a period of co-habitation of artists with residents in a unique political act to reimagine a city as a community, united through art, questioning the relationship between artistic practices and daily life.

Thanks to the Valletta Cultural Agency, in synergy with the Valletta Design Cluster and with the support of the Italian Institute of Culture La Valletta and Eu-Japan Fest, this October the festival is back in Malta, following the ECoC special Edition run in 2018. 2022 is dedicated to Valletta.

Nine international artists will be coming to Valletta, to live and work in the homes of nine residents and families.

“Out of the blue” is a synthesis of the aesthetic matters emerging from the dramaturgy of Altofest Valletta 2022. It represents the link between all the performances scheduled from 14th to 16th October.

The works that make up the programme of Altofest Valletta 2022 invite us to dive into unusual, unexpected dimensions that seem to come out of the blue. They are; pieces of a broken tradition, of a shattered heritage, that leave room for that element that remains outside the frame that cannot be foreseen or neutralised through systems of control.

‘Encara que sigui difícil pujar aquesta muntanya empinada plena de roques, un cop dins ja no en vull sortir. ’695

Un conjunt d’escenes que investiguen sobre la comunicació, els rituals diaris i la manipulació, per anar construint estats i paisatges que van des de la pura contemplació fins a arribar a d’altres amb caràcter gairebé apocalíptic. Una dona a escena que passa per diferents formes d’habitar un espai i la relació amb la natura com una experiència de correspondència identitària. Els diferents objectes i materials utilitzats inerts i orgànics es combinen en una seqüència coreogràfica de moviments, un procés de constant transformació en la recerca d’equilibri, plantejant qüestions sobre materialitat i traçabilitat. La relació entre el cos, l’objecte i la creació d’un codi sonor que ressona com un eco a la natura. Una veu que es perd o una veu que retorna una o vàries vegades. Un cicle en el que intervenen l’escolta, l’espera, el silenci i la resposta. Una combinació de presència i qüestionament sobre les possibilitats d’abstracció i poètiques.

NEW(A)DAYS Abitare futuro

“Abitare Futuro” is the theme inspiring this Altofest special edition. From 4th of November to 8th of December, over 26 international artists with performances in 11 towns of Basilicata Region, in 5 different areas, will be hosted by residents in their houses, which then become venues that welcome audiences. 

These artistic works breakthrough the households’ daily life, giving rise to the poetic part of life. 
Altofest explores experimental sociality through contemporary live art. It is based on the principle of proximity, gift, mutual care, giving rise to a direct relationship between the artist and the citizen, inaugurating a dialogue on the profound sense of hospitality.
